Getting Prepared For Running In The Cold

Going out in the winter for a run can be just as enjoyable as running during the summer, but you will have to be prepared to accept whatever the weather throws at you. Thankfully, many, if not all, of the sports brands make selections of winter running clothing to help you wrap up against the elements. This will enable you to run throughout the winter and retain your fitness.

Having a slip or fall is something that many people worry about when they consider running in the winter. This is the main reason that it is advisable to own at least two pairs of running shoes, one for your summer runs in dry conditions, and a pair of trail running shoes for use off road or in wet and muddy conditions. If snow and ice are a particular problem where you live, then there is also the option to buy a pair of Yaktrax (or something similar) which are traction devices that you can attach to the bottom of your shoes to stop you slipping on ice.

It is no good wearing a heavy coat as you will not be able to regulate your temperature properly once you start running. It’s far better to opt for several lightweight layers. Most of the time a compression or base layer, combined with your usual running top will be perfect. But for very cold weather, or rain and snow, it might be appropriate to wear a waterproof and breathable running jacket as a third layer. Aim to buy clothing that is made from moisture wicking technical fabrics, in order to keep your skin dry while you exercise.

In many cases, you can continue to wear shorts even in the winter, because the legs warm up rapidly when we start running and do not need the extra layers. If you live in a particularly cold climate, you might wish to wear something on your legs which is full length, such as a pair of running tights, but it is often best avoiding heavy cotton jogging pants. These are generally too heavy and will slow you down and use up extra energy you could be using for your running.

The last thing to think about is a few accessories that will make your winter running much more bearable. You will not need them in the summer, but getting a light pair of gloves and a beanie hat will help to keep you warm and comfy on those runs when the icy winds pick up.

If you are prepared properly with all the right gear, it will be very easy to continue running throughout the year, so that you will retain your fitness and keep those extra pounds at bay, ready for racing in the spring. For more information about running gear visit Triathonline.
